John Paul Pionke, Jr. age 79 of Jones, died Thursday June 4, 2009 at his home following a long illness. He was born in Kalamazoo on May 20, 1930 the son of John P. and Leah (Mickey) Pionke. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and later served in the U.S. Navy. John had worked for Peters Construction and Woodhams Construction while living in the Kalamazoo area, and was a member of the Operating Engineers Union. He moved to Jones in 1968 and worked for the Cass County Road Commission, retiring as the Superintendent of Roads in 1985.
John was married to Georgia (Cunnington) Miller in Kalamazoo on July 29, 1979. She survives along with 2 sons and daughters in law, Mike & Donna Pionke of Houghton and Andrew & Loretta Pionke of White Pigeon; 4 grandchildren, Crystal, Paul, Sarah, and Caitlin Pionke; 1 great-grandchild, Kamryn Chamness; 3 sisters, Rose Haas of Allegan, Roween Sewell of Anchorage, AK, and Ruth Golliver of Kalamazoo; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Catherine Pionke.
There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, June 8, 2009 at the Eickhoff, Farrand, Halverson Chapel in Three Rivers. Burial will follow at Poe Cemetery near Jones.
