Frederick "Fritz" Carl Schumann, age 70, of Portage, Michigan, passed away on August 7, 2025 at Three Rivers Health in Three Rivers, Michigan. Following a courageous and painful eleven-week battle after a spinal cord injury. He faced immense suffering with strength, humor, and a deep soulfulness that never left him—even in his final days.

He was born on June 21, 1955 in Cincinnati, Ohio a son to Edward and Donna( Houck) Schumann.

To know and love Fritz was an honor and a privilege. He was smart, strong, stubborn, mischievous, forgiving, and full of unexpected tenderness. Just when you thought you had him figured out, he would surprise you—with a moment of insight, a sharp observation, or a kindness that came out of nowhere.

He had a deep love for Aspen, Colorado, The Who, Stella Artois, music, animals, wandering, nature, books, and people whom the world too often overlooked. He loved his sister and brother deeply, many friends, and he loved his beloved friend, Ruth Coville, as well as her family as his own.

Though life was not always easy for Fritz, he lived with grit, humor, and a resilient spirit that inspired everyone around him. He traveled countless miles across the country, collecting not just stories, but experiences that shaped his view of the world—and those of us lucky enough to hear them.

Fritz is survived by his siblings: Gail Schumann and Ed Schumann. He is also survived by his beloved friend Ruth Coville and her children—Jim and his wife Lorena, David, and Dana Coville.

Fritz was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Donna Schumann.

In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place, no services have been scheduled at this time.
