Obituary

Douglas Charles Griffin, Sr., age 70 of Three Rivers, died Friday, Feb. 29, 2008 at his home. He was born in Three Rivers on Nov. 5, 1937 the son of James Francis and Virginia Irene (Carpenter) Griffin. Doug graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1955 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1955-58. He married his high school sweetheart, Etta Lewis on Feb. 8, 1959. Doug was a firefighter who worked for the Three Rivers Fire Department, the Kalamazoo Fire Department, and the G.M./ American Axle Manufacturing Fire Department. He was a member of the Light and Life Wesleyan Church, the Civitan Club, and the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Doug was co-founder of the Three Rivers Rocket Football program, and was active in the F.O.P. Baseball program. Doug is survived by his wife, Ettta; 3 children, Douglas (Beth) Griffin, Jr. of Elkhart, David (Kathy) Griffin of Three Rivers, and Kathy (Tony) Sampson of Three Rivers; 9 grandchildren, Chelsea, Kaitlyn, and Max Griffin of Elkhart, Suzy, Jacob, and Mike Sampson of Three Rivers, and Josh, Davy, and Tammy Griffin of Three Rivers; 2 step-grandchildren, Adam and Karrie Sandusky of Grand Rapids; 3 brothers, James (Joyce) Griffin of Three Rivers, Jerry (Brenda) Griffin of Howe, IN, and Albert (Cherie) Kohls of Lawton; 1 aunt, Vada (Richard) Kline of Lake Havasu City, AZ; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, James Griffin and his mother, Virginia Kohls. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Eickhoff, Farrand, Halverson Chapel in Three Rivers. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2008 at the Light and Life Wesleyan Church, 15765 Hoffman Rd., Three Rivers with Pastor Samuel Maddox officiating. Military interment will be in Moorepark Cemetery by Hice-Shutes American Legion Post #170. Memorials may be directed to either the Light and Life Wesleyan Church, or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
